In biblical times, a prophet was much more than a seer of the future. He did not speak in his own words, but repeated the words he received from God. What God speaks is truth, for God is truth. Jeremiah sees himself as a guardian of his people, as one who tests their ways, as a warning voice and teacher, and above all as a corrective to the king. He is servant of God and at the same time a comforter for his contemporaries. Like no other, he experiences and endures the tribulations of his time. He concentrates the pain of his comtemporaries in his own person and describes this suffering as a chronicler who is personally affected. But he does not stop there; through enduring and by transforming his soul's pain, he grows far beyond himself. Jeremiah's personal growth , his greatness are what makes him relevant for our times.
